Oaths

There was a custom in Jesus' day of taking oaths, but it was often used not to confirm the truthfulness of a statement, but to cover up falsehood. Here, Jesus teaches us that God's people should be characterized by truth-telling at all times, even when it hurts.

Making Sense of Tragedy

Tragedy happens. Those like the earthquake that struck the small, poor nation of Haiti in January 2010 may raise questions in our minds -- "Why do these things happen?"; "Is this God's judgment?"; "How can a good God allow this?" While explanations have been offered from all sides, we need to know how to think about and respond biblically to tragedy and suffering in our world.

We Don't Have To Wait

Advent is a season of anticipation -- a time of waiting. We reflect on the first coming of Christ, and we wait eagerly for his second coming to make all things right. On this first Sunday of Advent, we look at Hebrews chapter 9 and see that, though we wait for Christ, there are blessings from him that we no longer have to wait for.

What The Meek Know

What did Jesus mean when he said "blessed are the meek"? Was he saying that the way to God's blessing is through weakness? Through allowing themselves to be treated as a doormat?

By no means! Here we'll see that meekness is not weakness, and what it really means to be meek.

Jesus Wants To Break Your Heart

In what's commonly called "The Beatitudes", Jesus taught his followers what it truly means to live a life that is "blessed" by God. Their ideas of "blessing" were turned upside-down by Christ's teaching, and so this series on the Beatitudes is titled "The Upside-Down Life".

Jesus taught that those who mourn are "blessed". What did he mean when he said this? We'll see here that the heart that mourns is a heart that is compassionate for others, a heart that is contrite over its own sin, and a heart that will be comforted by Jesus.

Blessed are the Bankrupt

In what's commonly called "The Beatitudes", Jesus taught his followers what it truly means to live a life that is "blessed" by God. Their ideas of "blessing" were turned upside-down by Christ's teaching, and so this new series on the Beatitudes is called "The Upside-Down Life".

In this first sermon in the series, Greg Blosser expounds on what Jesus meant when he said "Blessed are the poor in spirit". Here we'll see that the life blessed by God is blessed with the Kingdom of God, the knowledge of God, and the grace of God.
